PROJECT DURATION
June 2022 - October 2022
LEADING A COMMUNITY-CENTERED DESIGN FELLOWSHIP
PROJECT OVERVIEW
3x3 partnered with the innovation team at Opportunity at Work to envision an online community for STARs (Workers Skilled Through Alternative Routes) through a participatory fellowship.
As project manager and design strategist, I designed and co-facilitated a 2-week fellowship, introducing STAR fellows to community-centered design, prototyping, and democratic governance models.
OUTCOMES
The fellowship equipped STARs with the tools and methods to develop and co-design an online community prototype. It supported the launch of Tear The Paper Ceiling, a national campaign created by Opportunity at Work and Ad Council to increase awareness and expand upward mobility for over 70 million STARs in the U.S.
The fellowship led to:
-
A STARs-led MVP strategy for an online community, and initial prototypes reflecting their needs and aspirations.
-
Capacity building for STAR fellows in community-centered design, enabling them to iterate and co-lead the platform's development.
-
A stronger alignment between STARs' needs and the organization's efforts to support an online community.
In the long term, the STAR-led digital community will serve as a hub for STARs to make meaningful connections, uplift each other throughout their career journey, and help drive the movement forward to support the national campaign.
