BUILDING A TRANSPARENT DATA DASHBOARD TO STRENGTHEN PUBLIC TRUST
PROJECT DURATION
May 2024 - October 2024 initial Launch
Continued development until September 2025
ROLE
Design Strategy , UX Research, Project Manager
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Center for Civic Design partnered with the Michigan Department of State (MDOS) to design and launch an interactive online election data dashboard. Our goal was to create a centralized, user-friendly platform for election data that would enhance transparency and instill confidence in the electoral process among voters.
As Lead UX Researcher, I oversaw the UX design and research for the dashboard from initial concept through launch and subsequent refinements. I collaborated closely with a UI designer and a cross-functional product team at MDOS, including product managers, communication strategists, developers, and election data specialists, to ensure its design was user-centric and easy to understand.
OUTCOMES
The Michigan Voting Dashboard, launched in October 2024, serves as a centralized hub for voting data, making it readily available, accessible, and understandable for anyone seeking it during an election.
As a result of the launch, the number of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests related to early voting and absentee ballot data was virtually eliminated. This reduction alleviated pressure on the Bureau of Elections (BoE), allowing it to focus on managing the election process. The dashboard also improved media accuracy and helped build public trust in the electoral system in the lead-up to the presidential election.
Between October and December 2024, the Voting Dashboard received nearly 345k views. Our team continues to develop the dashboard throughout 2025.
The dashboard received a Spotlight Award in the 2025 ClearMark Awards from the Center for Plain Language.
